Prior to the opening bell this morning, there will be an abundance of companies releasing their quarterly reports, including:

  • Twitter
  • MasterCard
  • Anheuser-Busch
  • UPS
  • Comcast
  • ConocoPhillips
  • Dow Chemical
  • Procter & Gamble
  • Verizon
  • Astrazeneca PLC
  • Charter Communications
  • Southwest Airlines
  • Nokia Corporation
  • Sirius XM Holdings, Inc.
  • MGM Resorts International

Then after the close, more major companies will be reporting their earnings:

  • Starbucks
  • Amazon
  • Expedia
  • Intel
  • Mattel

So far the quarterly earnings have been positive and beat expectations driving the US indices higher.  If today’s earnings beat expectations, we could see the US indices make new highs.  However, if the earnings fail to meet or exceed expectations, we could also see the US indices fall.  Of course, if there is a mixed bag (meaning both positive and negative earnings), then we could see spikes in both directions.

Additionally, since Amazon carries a weight of 7.316 in the Nasdaq index, their earnings report will more than likely create excessive volatility.
